Goat Town, 2012
Goat Town investigates the vast and consuming alterations being made to Guangzhou’s landscape using the backdrop of my family’s own transition. Desperate to elevate itself from Hong Kong’s shadow, the culturally rich, yet poor port city is giving way to generic high rises and constant construction. My mother was born in Guangzhou but escaped to Hong Kong leaving behind one of her brothers. Life then was difficult; even towels were cherished and hard to find.
Now, my uncle’s family is in the transition of leaving an old era. Behind them is their tiny, crowded apartment complex with only narrow, cracked stairs to go between floors. Before them is a sleek, uncluttered high rise. Despite arriving at luxury, they abandon not just collections of archaic artifacts, but a rich history at the threshold of erasure.
